First-Time Fiji Travel Checklist: Airport, Cash, SIMs and Transfers

A first-visit checklist organised around real decisions: documents, the route between stays, money, communication, luggage and confirmed arrival arrangements.

First-Time Fiji Travel Checklist: Airport, Cash, SIMs and Transfers

For a first Fiji trip, organise the holiday in the order you will use it: entry documents, the correct arrival date, transport to the first accommodation, a working contact method and a realistic first day. Then check money, luggage and later connections. A good checklist identifies who has confirmed each arrangement. It should let another traveller find the essential information without depending on your phone, memory or the person who originally made the booking.

Check entry requirements before paying for the itinerary

Use the Fiji Ministry of Immigration visitor-permit guidance to establish what applies to your nationality and purpose of travel. Its guidance distinguishes visa-exempt visitors from travellers who need a visa before departure. Check the official requirements and the operating airline’s document instructions rather than assuming a friend’s recent experience applies to your passport.

Compare the passenger name on every flight with the travel document. Check expiry dates, any onward journey and the address of the first accommodation while there is time to resolve discrepancies. If different members of a family have different passports, make a separate document check for each person.

Keep the evidence together, but do not send passport scans to every supplier simply because you are arranging a holiday. A driver generally needs practical journey details, not your full identity-document file. Share sensitive information only through an appropriate channel when a legitimate booking requirement makes it necessary.

Draw the journey between beds before choosing excursions

Write down where you will sleep each night. Then add how you will move between those places. This reveals whether an apparently simple holiday actually contains several road, boat or flight connections. An attractive room offer is less useful if the arrival connection does not work with the international flight.

Distinguish a mainland accommodation from an island resort. A car journey on Viti Levu does not include a boat or domestic flight unless those separate services are explicitly arranged. For any island connection, obtain the exact departure point and reporting time from the operating company.

Do the same for the final night. Staying somewhere that requires a morning boat before an international flight creates a different dependency from sleeping near your departure airport. Ask each operator whether your proposed combination is workable before building activities around it.

Create one travel sheet with clear ownership

The travel sheet should contain the flight number, Fiji arrival date, first property’s full name, confirmed transfer details and one contact for each service. Save the final confirmation rather than only the original enquiry. An unanswered request is still unresolved, however complete it looked when you sent it.

Use a simple status beside each item: confirmed, awaiting response or not yet arranged. This prevents the common situation in which everyone assumes another person booked the return transfer. Assign one person to follow up each open item and record when they need to act.

Item Evidence to keep
Accommodation Reservation, address and arrival instructions.
Airport pickup Accepted quotation, meeting instructions and operator contact.
Island connection Operating company, exact terminal and reporting requirement.
Return journey Pickup location and date checked against the final flight.

Make a small money plan for the first day

List the payments you may need immediately: transport, a meal, a small purchase or an accommodation balance. Ask each relevant provider which payment methods it accepts and when payment is due. A card accepted for an online deposit does not automatically mean the driver has an in-vehicle card terminal.

Check the currency displayed before approving a payment. Compare the complete amount and any stated payment charge rather than mentally converting a headline number while tired. Keep a receipt or confirmation and make sure another payment has not already been made by a travelling companion.

Consider a backup payment method that does not depend on the same device or account. Decide how you will obtain an appropriate amount of Fiji-dollar cash without carrying your entire holiday budget around. Your bank can clarify its own overseas fees and card controls; a transfer operator cannot predict those charges.

Arrange communication before it becomes urgent

Decide whether you will use roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM, then check compatibility and activation instructions with the actual provider. The useful question is whether your phone will let you contact the right people on arrival. The advertised data allowance is secondary if the device cannot use the product.

Save the transfer and accommodation contacts before departure. Test that you can find the international-format number and the booking reference. If WhatsApp is your agreed contact method, tell the operator which number will remain reachable after any SIM change.

Keep an offline copy of the meeting instructions and property address. A screenshot can be more useful than a web link when the phone has no connection. For a group, share those basics with at least one other adult so that a flat battery does not leave everyone without the plan.

Pack an arrival bag that can be reached easily

Put the items you will need before opening the suitcase into one small, accessible bag: travel documents, charging equipment, essential personal items and the relevant confirmations. Choose its contents according to the airline’s current cabin-baggage rules and your own requirements.

If you have requested a child restraint or are carrying a stroller, tell the transport provider what is travelling. Count large cases, cabin bags and unusual equipment separately. Passenger numbers describe people; they do not establish how much luggage a particular vehicle can accommodate.

Review the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji declaration guidance before packing food, plant or animal products and used outdoor equipment. Read the current categories and declare items as required. Do not let a well-meant gift or leftover snack become something you forgot was in the bag.

Give the transfer provider a precise destination

Use the full accommodation name and exact location, not just “Nadi”, “Denarau” or “Coral Coast”. For a villa, obtain the property’s entrance instructions and host contact. A map label for the neighbourhood may not identify the driveway where the journey needs to end.

When using Taxitics’ fixed-fare booking, check the selected pickup and drop-off zones separately from the address text. The zone pair determines the fixed base fare. The exact location tells the driver where to go; typing a different hotel name does not correct an incorrectly selected zone.

Read the accepted quotation for the actual passenger group, luggage requirements and requested additions. Ask about anything unclear before paying. For travel within 48 hours, contact the team to check availability rather than treating a submitted form as an automatic vehicle confirmation.

Keep the arrival day deliberately simple

The Fiji Airports arrivals page provides official flight information, but landing time is only one part of reaching your accommodation. Border processing, luggage collection and meeting the vehicle happen afterwards. Leave room for that sequence instead of scheduling a demanding activity immediately after touchdown.

Ask the property about room access if the flight arrives before check-in. Confirm what is available while you wait, such as luggage storage, without assuming it is included. The road transfer and the room-readiness arrangement are separate parts of the day.

Choose an arrival meal or first activity that can move if necessary. A flexible start gives you time to settle, check communications and understand the accommodation. You can make a better sightseeing decision once everyone has rested than while trying to rescue several tightly timed reservations.

Choose one priority for the first full day

Ask each traveller what would make the first day worthwhile. One person may want time at the accommodation; another may prefer a garden, cultural visit or a short outing. Look for one main experience that fits the group instead of treating a long attraction list as a challenge.

Check the attraction’s own opening information, access conditions and booking requirements. If a visit involves a host or a religious site, ask about appropriate dress and behaviour. Do not assume that an address on a map means unrestricted visitor access.

Plan transport around that experience, including the return. A driver dropping you off does not necessarily remain nearby or wait indefinitely. Decide whether the service is a direct transfer, a return journey or an agreed touring arrangement and obtain confirmation of the scope.

Read the weather at two different stages

At booking time, use climate information to understand the broad season. Tourism Fiji describes a wetter November-to-April period and a drier May-to-October period. These are general patterns, not a forecast for your holiday dates or a promise that every region behaves identically.

Near departure and during the stay, consult current official forecasts and operator advice. Let the actual conditions influence exposed outings and connections. Keep at least one lower-commitment option so that changing a plan does not require rebuilding every reservation.

Avoid treating a weather icon as a complete description of a day. Check the relevant location and the information behind it. If an operator changes a service because of conditions, clarify the practical alternatives directly rather than assuming another provider can simply bypass the problem.

Close the checklist with the journey home

Before becoming absorbed in the holiday, verify the departure airport, local flight date and final accommodation. Work backwards from the airline’s reporting requirement when arranging the return pickup. A departure transfer needs its own confirmed details even if the same company handled the arrival.

Keep time for checkout, collecting stored luggage and assembling the group. If plans change and you move properties, update the return origin promptly. An old booking does not follow you automatically to a new hotel.

Use the more detailed Nadi arrival guide for the airport sequence and the Fiji packing guide for activity-specific preparation. The purpose of the checklist is to make the essential arrangements visible, leaving the rest of the holiday easier to enjoy.

Ask Taxitics about your transport plan or contact the team on WhatsApp with your date, pickup point and passenger details.

Frequently asked questions

What should I arrange first for a Fiji holiday?

Check entry requirements and travel dates, then confirm accommodation and the connections between stays before booking tightly timed activities.

Do I need to organise the airport transfer separately from the hotel?

Check the exact accommodation package. Only treat transport as included when the reservation confirms the service and its meeting arrangements.

What information should be saved offline?

Keep the flight details, accommodation address, transfer confirmation, meeting instructions and essential contact numbers available without a data connection.

Should the first day include several tours?

A lightly scheduled arrival day makes room for airport processing, travel and room readiness. Reserve demanding activities for a day when the group can start rested.

How do I avoid missing an unbooked connection?

List each road, boat and flight leg separately, mark its confirmation status and assign one person to resolve every outstanding item.

Sharvind day tour 10/10! We did the half day tour with Sharvind and I think he is the best tour guide I have had in my years of travelling. He was super friendly, patient with us at each stop, always took time at each stop to tell us the meaning of the landmarks and was really informative and interesting to listen too, he took pictures for us and was overall a really really lovely person that we would happily go back to Fiji just to tour with him again. We travelled the yasawa islands for a week and yet our favourite time in Sydney was with Sharvind on his tour. I really hope he is able to get the recognition he deserves for the service he provides and I wish on anyone travelling to Fiji to make sure you book the day tour with him!

Many Kudos for Sharvind! Sharvind is a most gracious and knowledgable tour guide I am so glad to have met him. He is Fiji hospitality and adventure. What started as a transfer to my hotel in Coral Coast ended up cross-island Nadi-Suva, Colo-I-Suva and Sigatoka sand dunes, Taveuni/Savusavu/Labasa via ferry, and even a farm tour at Bulaccino. Whatever version of Fiji you want to see, he can make it happen. Highly recommend this company, glad to have made a friend on my first time in Fiji.

Highly recommend Amazing service! It was fantastic to be able to book and pay online before arriving in Fiji, making everything completely stress-free. Sharvind communicated every day to let us know he was on his way, so we always knew exactly when to expect him. What really made the experience special was that it was so much more than just a taxi service. As we travelled, Sharvind shared information about the places we were passing, the local culture, and life in Fiji, turning every journey into a mini tour. It made the drives genuinely enjoyable and helped us appreciate so much more of the country. Sharvind was friendly, professional, reliable and punctual throughout our trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone visiting Fiji and would absolutely book with him again.

Free day exploring Fiji Sharvind provided a very pleasant end of our trip as we returned from tokoriki and had a free day to explore the main island. Around to gardens, provided excellent background information, and took us to a small local village that he knew well. The locals made our trip! We got to enjoy some customer drinks and watched them perform a dance performance and then they brought us in and we got to join them. It felt very authentic and was a special part of Fiji.
