SIMs, eSIMs and WhatsApp: Stay in Touch With Your Fiji Driver

Choose a workable connection, test your contact details and prepare a simple offline backup before flying to Fiji.

SIMs, eSIMs and WhatsApp: Stay in Touch With Your Fiji Driver

To stay in touch with your Fiji driver, arrange a suitable mobile connection and save the booking details before you fly. Check whether your phone supports your chosen SIM or eSIM, confirm how you will call or message, and keep the meeting point offline. A working WhatsApp contact is useful, but an airport pickup should not depend on obtaining mobile data immediately after landing.

Decide what you need the connection to do

For a pickup, the essential jobs are modest: open the confirmation, send a short update, receive a reply and make contact if the meeting point is unclear. The best plan for these tasks may differ from the package you want for streaming videos throughout a long holiday. Separate arrival-day communication from your broader data shopping.

Write down whether you need internet messaging only, ordinary phone calls, SMS or all three. A product described as a travel eSIM may have different features from your usual home mobile plan. Read the actual inclusions rather than treating the word “SIM” as a promise that every type of contact will work.

Also decide whose phone is the main booking contact. If the reservation uses one traveller’s number but another person will carry the working phone, tell the provider. A driver messaging a phone left in flight mode will not know that the rest of the party has already connected on a different device.

Compare roaming, a physical SIM and an eSIM

Home-network roaming may be convenient if your provider confirms Fiji coverage and acceptable charges. A local physical SIM may suit an unlocked phone with a suitable SIM slot. An eSIM may avoid handling a small physical card, but the device and plan must support it. None of these options should be chosen on the label alone.

Vodafone Fiji’s tourist eSIM information explains its digital SIM option. Its device guidance identifies compatibility and network unlocking as checks for eSIM use. Confirm the instructions for the specific tourist product you intend to purchase, because registration and activation processes can differ between products.

Make a small comparison sheet with the provider, validity period, included services, activation process, support contact and total cost. Include whether you can buy before travel or must complete something after arrival. This makes a choice easier than comparing only the largest data allowance shown in an advertisement.

Check the device before paying

Find the exact phone model and its regional version in the device settings. Similar model names can conceal differences in supported features. Use the manufacturer’s and network provider’s compatibility information, and ask your home carrier about any network lock. Do these checks while you can still contact support comfortably.

If you plan to use an eSIM, confirm that the phone has room for the required profile and that you understand the installation steps. Keep the provider’s instructions available on another screen or as a saved document. Do not start changing several settings at once while your family is trying to locate the driver.

For a physical SIM, consider how you will keep the original card safe. A small labelled envelope or proper holder is more reliable than a loose pocket. Keep any supplied registration and recovery information privately with your travel records, not in a large holiday group chat.

Plan the activation moment

Read when the package’s validity begins. The answer may depend on the product, so do not assume that buying, installing and first connecting all trigger the same clock. An early installation can be convenient only if it follows the provider’s instructions and does not unexpectedly use part of a short validity period.

Make sure you can access any email or code required to complete the process. A setup that relies on a message sent to your home number may be awkward if that number is temporarily unavailable. Check the steps in advance and keep a support route that does not depend entirely on the connection you are trying to activate.

If buying a physical tourist SIM on arrival, allow for registration. Vodafone’s tourist SIM terms identify a valid physical passport for registration at its Nadi Airport outlet. Check the current outlet arrangements and requirements directly; do not assume a purchase will take no time or that every outlet is open for every arrival.

Send the important message before flying

Use an existing connection to confirm the booking contact and meeting instructions before departure. Include your flight number, Fiji arrival date and full destination name. Ask which contact to use if there is a delay and whether a second number can be added to the reservation.

A practical message might say: “Our main contact is this number. We may be offline briefly after landing. Please confirm the pickup meeting point and the number we should call if we cannot locate the vehicle.” This tells the provider what to expect without promising that the airport exit time is known.

Save the reply rather than relying on memory. It should identify an actual meeting place, not simply say that someone will find you. Keep your booking reference and lead guest name close to that instruction so you can identify the reservation quickly if you need help.

Make a small offline pickup pack

Take screenshots or save a local copy of the confirmation, meeting point, full hotel address and contact number. Open those files with mobile data switched off before leaving home to ensure that the information is truly available. A web link sitting in a chat is not always useful without a connection.

Give a second adult the same essential information if possible. A paper note with the provider’s number, booking name and destination is also useful when a phone runs out of charge. Avoid placing passport numbers, card details or unnecessary personal information on a note you may show to several people.

Save an arrival-area map or the relevant hotel location for reference, but follow the confirmed meeting instructions. A map pin cannot tell you every airport access rule or where a vehicle is permitted to stop. If the plan is unclear, ask the provider to clarify it before the travel day.

Keep the first update short and useful

Once it is appropriate to use your phone and you have a connection, send a simple status update. “Landed; collecting baggage” tells the provider more than “We are here”, which could mean aboard the aircraft, in the terminal or outside at a different entrance.

If you are delayed by baggage or another arrival process, explain the stage you have reached without predicting an exact finish time you cannot know. Keep essential border and airline processes first. There is no need to share photos of personal travel documents to prove that you are waiting.

When ready to meet, use the agreed point and describe a clear public landmark if needed. Avoid wandering between entrances while a driver is heading to the place you just mentioned. If you move, send the new location and wait for acknowledgement when possible.

What to do when data does not work

Start with the provider’s documented troubleshooting steps and confirm that the intended mobile line is selected for data. Avoid deleting an eSIM profile or resetting the entire phone on impulse; recovery may be harder than the original issue. If the process is taking time, use your offline plan to locate the agreed meeting point.

If the booking contact is unreachable, use the alternate contact arranged in advance. An airport information desk or your accommodation may be able to help you make a call, but ask rather than assume that assistance or Wi-Fi is guaranteed. State the business name, reservation lead name and the place you are waiting.

Keep the group together while one adult handles the problem. Sending different people to search independently can create a second communication issue. A phone problem is easier to resolve when the location and booking details remain consistent.

Check costs without interrupting the pickup

Review your home provider’s roaming settings and fees before travel. On a phone with more than one line, understand which line is being used for data and calls. Do not assume that turning on a travel package automatically turns off every chargeable service on the home account.

Large automatic downloads, video backups and operating-system updates can wait until you have a suitable connection and understand the allowance. For the arrival itself, short text messages are usually enough to communicate the information that matters. The aim is a dependable contact path, not a complicated technology exercise at the terminal.

Keep a charging cable and a charged power bank where airline rules allow. Check those airline rules before packing batteries. The practical benefit is simple: the phone holding the confirmation should still have charge when you are ready for pickup and again when you reach accommodation.

Use accommodation as an agreed backup contact

If you expect limited connectivity at your accommodation, ask whether reception can receive a transport message for you and how you should identify the reservation. Get permission before listing the property as a contact, and make clear that it is a backup rather than the person who made the booking.

Write down the reception number privately with the full property name. If you move hotels, replace the old contact in the return-transfer notes. A provider trying to reach the wrong reception can lose time even when your own phone number is still correct.

For a private apartment without a staffed desk, agree another realistic contact route with the host or travelling party. Do not assume a booking-platform message will be seen immediately. The best fallback is a person who knows they are the fallback and has the correct reference, date and pickup details.

Maintain the same contact plan during the holiday

Tell the provider if you change numbers or the main contact leaves before the return transfer. Save the return booking under the same trip folder and check the date and pickup property after any hotel move. A successful arrival connection does not automatically update the later reservation.

For a longer stay, review package validity before the final day rather than discovering it has expired while waiting for an early airport transfer. Ask your accommodation about internet access if you plan to rely on it for reconfirmation. Coverage and property connectivity should be checked for the places you will actually visit.

Our Nadi arrival guide covers the wider arrival plan. For communication, the most useful combination is a tested connection, a clear message and an offline copy of the agreed meeting instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rely only on WhatsApp for my Nadi pickup?

WhatsApp is useful when your phone has an internet connection. Also save the agreed meeting point, booking reference and a callable contact offline so a connection problem does not leave you without instructions.

Will every phone work with a Fiji eSIM?

No. Check the exact model, regional version, eSIM support and network-unlocked status against the chosen provider’s current requirements before purchasing.

Should I activate my travel eSIM before flying?

Follow the product’s instructions and check when validity begins. Buying, installing and activating can have different meanings; do not assume that every package works the same way.

What should I message after landing?

State your reservation name or reference and a simple status such as landed, collecting baggage or ready at the agreed meeting point. Avoid promising an exact exit time before completing arrival processes.

What if I change my phone number during the trip?

Tell the transfer provider which number is now the main contact and reconfirm the return pickup details. Keep a second contact where possible.

Sharvind day tour 10/10! We did the half day tour with Sharvind and I think he is the best tour guide I have had in my years of travelling. He was super friendly, patient with us at each stop, always took time at each stop to tell us the meaning of the landmarks and was really informative and interesting to listen too, he took pictures for us and was overall a really really lovely person that we would happily go back to Fiji just to tour with him again. We travelled the yasawa islands for a week and yet our favourite time in Sydney was with Sharvind on his tour. I really hope he is able to get the recognition he deserves for the service he provides and I wish on anyone travelling to Fiji to make sure you book the day tour with him!

Many Kudos for Sharvind! Sharvind is a most gracious and knowledgable tour guide I am so glad to have met him. He is Fiji hospitality and adventure. What started as a transfer to my hotel in Coral Coast ended up cross-island Nadi-Suva, Colo-I-Suva and Sigatoka sand dunes, Taveuni/Savusavu/Labasa via ferry, and even a farm tour at Bulaccino. Whatever version of Fiji you want to see, he can make it happen. Highly recommend this company, glad to have made a friend on my first time in Fiji.

Highly recommend Amazing service! It was fantastic to be able to book and pay online before arriving in Fiji, making everything completely stress-free. Sharvind communicated every day to let us know he was on his way, so we always knew exactly when to expect him. What really made the experience special was that it was so much more than just a taxi service. As we travelled, Sharvind shared information about the places we were passing, the local culture, and life in Fiji, turning every journey into a mini tour. It made the drives genuinely enjoyable and helped us appreciate so much more of the country. Sharvind was friendly, professional, reliable and punctual throughout our trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone visiting Fiji and would absolutely book with him again.

Free day exploring Fiji Sharvind provided a very pleasant end of our trip as we returned from tokoriki and had a free day to explore the main island. Around to gardens, provided excellent background information, and took us to a small local village that he knew well. The locals made our trip! We got to enjoy some customer drinks and watched them perform a dance performance and then they brought us in and we got to join them. It felt very authentic and was a special part of Fiji.
